Competing with Self

The attitude of competing with others is popular in our world today. What about competing with our own selves? We have our Team leads, managers to push us to perform well. The monthly, weekly review is prevalent everywhere. Are we stressed in the middle of all the pressure to perform well? Are we stuck here? It is going to be tough to move forward if we concentrate on the pressure we get from others. Targets will be there. Emergency tasks will be there. Work will be there endlessly. But are we ready to face it? Are we ready to handle the stress? Take small steps. Work with a to do list when starting the day. Evaluate your performance everyday. Be your own critic. Appreciate yourself if you have done extra work than yesterday. If you have met extra requirements than yesterday. Encourage yourself to move forward. None can land the level of experienced worker in a month or two. Learn the basics.

When an experienced performer expects the same level of performance from you. Though it’s not reasonable, don’t add that pressure in your mind and allow it to stop you. Try to show some competitiveness. Take it as a challenge. Challenge yourself to do better than your last performance. Solving a task, facing and winning a challenge will build confidence in you. It is the beginning of growth. Your self admiration will grow and your self respect will increase which will give you a healthy mind to face, cope with and overcome challenges.

A famous athlete, runner Revathy Veeramani when in an interview was asked who is your role model. She surprisingly said “I won’t look at others and want to grow like them”. Instead she said “I am my own competitor”. Everyday I concentrate on how much I have grown than yesterday. You can definitely see a growth in that woman’s life. She was not the person she was one year before. Her passion to improve herself drove her to grow to greater heights. She was a lady from a village background but, today her identity is an olympian. Determination to work on yourself will give wonders. Revathy is a prime example for that.

Compete with yourself.Outgrow yourself, your talents, your skills, your performance everyday. Become the better version of you. Grow in your career.
